The History of our Vintage Flour & Sugar Sack Aprons:

On our newest adventure out west to The Peacock Cafe, we've been selling some fabulous aprons constructed from vintage flour and sugar sacks that I ventured all the way to Minnesota to find.

{Here I am in my very own vintage flour sack apron, what I wear each day while baking, with some lovely friends and their little munchkins at The Peacock Cafe!}

Somehow, through all of these sack's many travels, they wound-up in our little boutique/restaurant, and are now custom aprons with pockets and linen ruffle detailing:

The greatest part of the story is THIS:

Our dear friend and avid Farmstead/Peacock supporter, Julie Marie, ordered an apron, and after receiving it from us, she was inspired to research the history of the flour/sugar sacks

{all while baking the most beautiful cherry pie!}

Upon going to the library and researching the
Layton Sugar Factory in Layton Utah,
she found all sorts of fascinating information!

Early 1900's: The Sugar Mill in Layton, Utah:

Located on none-other than "Sugar Street" itself!

Here's the kicker: these sacks, filled with flour and sugar used many years ago for baking wonderful goodies, were originally "shipped" with 52 oxen teams to the very first city in Kansas, also known as...

Leavenworth, Kansas--right where The Peacock Cafe currently resides! That's right--this isn't their first stop here; they've been here before, long ago! We couldn't believe it, and we know it is no coincidence! Everything in life comes full circle from where it once "blossomed".

More than a simple "good luck charm", we consider these aprons a reminder from God to work diligently at all things as if working for Him--because we are!

We hope you've been blessed by this amazing story, and we want to thank Julie Marie {pictured below in her lovely, vintage apron and vintage Farmstead boots} for all of her hard work and creative initiative to give our amazing, custom aprons a blast through their very own past!

Isn't she just a doll?! Rockin' that apron and whippin' out pies and research left and right!

They retail for $48.00 each.

{Call 913. 651.9914 or email me at kelly@farmsteadlifestyle.com

to order your own!}

With love and warm wishes,
Farm/Peacock-Girl,
Kelly

Oooh my goodness Kelly!... can you imagine how surprised I was to look at your blog this morning and see this wonderful post!.. you look adorable in your apron!... and how sweet of you to post some of the photos from my home and the history behind them... I love finding out more about my vintage treasures and had alot of fun doing so... I did learn just yesterday the old Sugar Company was demolished in 2000, so sad to see history torn down... but it lives on, in my beautiful apron which is full of memories from long ago... thanks so much sweet lady!... xoxo Julie Marie PS I may just have to bake another pie in it today, tee hee hee!... xoxo Julie Marie

I was just talking family history with my son and was telling him about how his great-great grandfather worked at the sugar beet factory (a hop skip and a jump from our back yard)
here in Layton, Utah. He wanted to see what it looked like back then, so thanks to google I came across your site. We live in my great grandfather's home now and can see right where the sugar beet factory used to sit from our back window. We have so much history here and I LOVE it! I am so curious to know if you happen to have any of the sugar sacks? I know it's been years since this post, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed...Thank you!
